Computer harddrive crashes/failures are things that can happen at any time to anyone. Should your system ever crash, this tip can save you countless dollars and time in getting your system back in operation. Its easy to do and only takes a few minutes a week.

Unlike most Windows programs, your Masterwood machine keeps all of the important files in one folder (MW310) and one file in the windows directory (MW310.ini). They arerelatively small but extremely important. By keeping a current backup of this folder and file you can avoid having to re-enter all of your machine parameters etc should the system crash.

Simply copy the folder and the file to a disk or usb stick and keep it in a safe place. Then if you need to restore your system you can simply copy the folder and file back to their respective locations and save precious time.

Tech Tip - Check Your Belts!(click to learn more)

Drive belts, much like those used on your car or lawn tractor are used to physically turn the ballscrew for the x, y, and z axis’. The belts are very durable and last a long time, but eventually they will wear, crack or even snap. A worn or damaged belt can cause errors while running parts and put additional stress on your servo motors and drives. If your belt breaks, your machine will be down until it is replaced. Belts are reasonably inexpensive, usually $45 - $150 each. Keep extras on hand to help prevent unexpected costly down time.

Check your belts every 3 or 4 months. If a belt is worn, cracked or has any other damage it should be replaced as soon as possible. X & Y axis belts are reasonably easy to replace, but you should have a trained service tech replace the z belt.

To check the X or Y belt:

  • Turn the power off on the machine.
  • Find the servo motor for each axis, the belt is connected to a pulley on each motor. There is usually a cover over it.
  • Remove the belt cover and blow off the belt area with air.
  • Now, slowly turn the belt by hand and closely examine it for excessive wear or cracks.
  • Check the belt tension. If it is too tight, it can cause strain on your servo motor. If it is too loose, it can "slip" causing errors in programs. Generally, if you push on the belt it should give about 5mm and flex back.
The Z axis belt:

  • The process is much the same; however, you will not be able to rotate the z axis belt by hand because there is a brake applied to the z motor while it is standing still. Also, you may find it somewhat more difficult to remove the cover for the z axis belt. On most machines there is a gap on the z that you can put a flashlight in for a quick inspection.

Notes: A Speedy 207 will not have a z axis belt as it doesn’t have a true z axis. The Project 416 does not have an x axis belt because it uses a rack and pinion direct drive system.
